Don't Miss the 2nd Annual 12 Points Bike Ride Sunday June 1, 2008
The 12-Points Bike Ride lets Scout youth and their families learn more about the meaning of Scout law while gaining a deeper appreciation of different religious faiths. The Ride is open to all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Venture Crews, and their families.
At each stop, a member of the Clergy will discuss one of the 12 points of Scout law, describe the basic theological tenets of their religion, and point out interesting architectural and historical aspects of their House of Worship. The ride will end with a picnic dinner. More>>>

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” as the saying goes, and it could be worth even more to the Cub Scout, Boy Scout or Venturer who wins the 2008 Summer Camp Photo Contest sponsored by the Greater Pittsburgh Council. The theme is “It’s a Scout’s Life.”
Each summer, nearly 7,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers participate in Resident Camp at Heritage Reservation, Advancement Camp at Camp Twin Echo, or Day Camp at various locations in southwestern Pennsylvania. Hundreds of Scouts bring cameras to record memories that will last the rest of your life. Why not win a prize while you’re at it? More>>>

In partnership with UPMC Health Plan, the Greater Pittsburgh Council has launched a new wellness program to help Scouts and their families make good food choices and benefit from physical fitness.
Part of the program initiative Scouting for Healthy Habits… Healthy Living, the council teamed with experts at UPMC Health Plan to publish a Wellness Badge Handbook for every registered Boy Scout, with accompanying Parent Guides. As many as 1,000 Boy Scouts are expected to earn the badge in 2008.
The handbook includes sections on family health history, forming healthy habits, goals for wellness, and nutritious and easy-to-make camping recipes.
Scout for Healthy Habits...Healthy Living was developed in 2006 to respond to the worsening societal issue of child obesity. Physical fitness always has been a big part of Scouting at all age levels; keeping “physically strong” is an integral component of the Scout Oath.
The goal of the Wellness Badge is to help Scouts understand that good health is an active, lifelong process of learning about and making better choices. Are you a member?

As dedicated BSA volunteers, you understand the importance of keeping our youth safe in the Scouting program. To ensure Youth Protection, our organization has conducted criminal background checks on all new volunteers since April 2003. Because some volunteers have been continually registered in the program before April 2003, some have not had a criminal background check. In the next few moths, we will be communicating with those volunteers on this issue.
Volunteers who have not had a background check will receive a letter from our Chief Scout Executive, Bob Mazzuca, recognizing them as valued volunteers and explaining the need for criminal background checks and our continued youth protection efforts. The letter will explain the need for consent to conduct a criminal background check and direct volunteers to a new Web site (www.bsacbc.org) where volunteers can authorize and provide information needed to conduct a CBC.

We’d like you to meet Johnny. He just joined the Tiger Cubs, and is excited about Scouting. But what kind of program will he take part in as he climbs the ranks on the way to becoming an Eagle Scout and future leader? We want to provide the best possible experience as he walks the Scouting trail.
Greater Pittsburgh Council is gearing up for an exciting 2008 as we develop a new Strategic Long Range Plan that will guide and shape our entire operation over the next five years. As we approach the Boy Scouts of America’s centennial year in 2010, there never has been a more crucial time to examine the impact Scouting has on our communities, families and young people. More>>>>
