Greater Pittsburgh Council Organizing for Community Emergencies As part of Scouting’s national Good Turn initiative that is running through 2009, the council has organized an emergency preparedness committee that will be called “Scout Ready NET.” The Scout Ready NET Committee, comprised of council volunteers, Red Cross leaders and the council’s eleven district coordinators, is actively recruiting unit level coordinators to form “a contact network” for disaster readiness in our region.
Scout Ready NET involves three main areas of involvement:
Education: Boy Scouts and leaders are invited to become certified as trainers for Red Cross health and safety courses in order to host emergency preparedness programs within their troop. Cub Scouts will be encouraged to earn achievement badges and Boy Scouts will be able to earn merit badges.
Preparedness: Suggested future “hands on” Scout projects could include preparing disaster kits, adopting a fire hydrant, and participating in local community shelter drills.
Response: When disasters strike…Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers will be asked to volunteer with clean-up efforts and distributing relief items to victims at community shelters.
